Ask A Naturalist
This bird apparently flew into our window at work and died, can you tell me what it is?
This is a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Not a very common bird and it is a shame that it flew into the window. They are caterpillar eaters and have a strange migration pattern. They do not return to the same area every year and you never know where they will show up.
Window strikes are one of the leading causes of death for migratory birds. There is a movement in some big cities to turn lights out at night, which seem to attract birds. Cleveland is just beginning this project and hopefully will be in full swing soon.
Thanks for the question.
