Ask A Naturalist

What is "Ask a Naturalist" all about?

Send us your identification or behavior questions about plants and animals observed in Cleveland Metroparks, your back yard or anywhere in Ohio. A Cleveland Metroparks expert staff member from our Outdoor Experiences or Natural Resource Departments will provide you an answer. Photographs work best, but a detailed description and behavioral observations are often enough to provide an answer, too.

While walking the woods in Mill Stream at the Strongsville plateau on the Middleburg line, I found an Eastern Box Turtle today sleeping at 4 pm under an old broken tree branch next to a huge oak tree. I picked him up and observed that he was probably a little sluggish from the cold temps and I put him back and covered him with some Fall leaves as his shell coloring stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the gray, brown and black of the debris on the forest floor. I took a pic with my phone and by the rings on his/her shell plate, he/she is 14 years old. This is the first time I have ever seen a tortoise in the woods in my many, many years of walking them. I have a good pic, although he/she didn't "Come Out" for the photo op!
