Research: Conservation status of the fishing cat in the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh
Species/Topic: Fishing cat
Abstract: The natural history, ecology, and status of the endangered fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) still remain largely unknown. Many recent forest surveys across tropical Southeast Asia have failed to record the occurrence of the species. This could be because fishing cat habitat needs are tied more closely to wetlands and coastal mangroves, all of which are disappearing rapidly across its range. We propose to conduct a survey for fishing cats across the major wetlands of Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. We will combine these results with information we collect from a variety of media sources to construct a general distribution model for the species in the country. We will also assess community attitudes toward fishing cats among rural residents managing fish ponds, as well as the levels of conflict with fishing cats they may be experiencing. Finally, we will initiate the first detailed local study of the ecology of fishing cat in Bangladesh.
