Research: Safeguarding Gorilla and Chimpanzee in Cameroon’s Dja Biosphere Reserve
Species/Topic: Western lowland gorilla and central chimpanzee
The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) respectfully requests support for our project to build the capacity of the Dja Conservation Service to safeguard chimpanzees and gorillas from the many forms of illegal human encroachment currently occurring within Cameroon’s Dja Biosphere Reserve. AWF is currently working with the Dja Conservation Service to train and equip rangers to enable them to implement an effective ecological monitoring and counter-poaching program within a 2,000km2 pilot area of the reserve. The field observations recorded through this ecological monitoring protocol are then used to inform the development of an evidence-based conservation strategy for managing the reserve. Initial results of this project are very positive, and we seek the support of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Cleveland Zoological Society to augment this work by purchasing additional needed equipment for the reserve rangers.
