Research: Improving Existing Methods for Assessing Baird's Tapir Populations
Species/Topic: Baird's Tapirs
Abstract: This project aims to develop a reliable method of tapir population estimation utilizing radio telemetry density estimates and transects methods. Accurate population estimates are necessary to allow managers and policy makers to make informed decisions about adequate park size, reintroduction programs, translocation programs, establishment of corridors, and hunting control. Knowledge of the numbers and status of tapirs will aid in the evaluation of existing and future conservation efforts, as well as provide a powerful tool in assessing the impact of human activities, such as hunting and habitat fragmentation, in a region.
